Every so often a new talent emerges seemingly from nowhere and takes the music world by storm. Welcome to the stage Kiwi singer-songwriter Theia (Em-Haley Walker).
Walker made her debut in 2015 (then known as Plum) with the electro-pop-meets-sultry-R’n’B track ‘Silver Second’, produced by Alex Hope (Troye Sivan and Broods). It caught the attention of tastemaker blogs Hillydilly and Pigeons & Planes and established Walker as one of New Zealand music’s most exciting emerging acts.
In August 2016, after a name change to Theia, Walker released her first official single ‘Roam’, produced by Josh Fountain (Leisure). A catchy glitter pop anthem with a soaring chorus, it went on to become one of the biggest breakout hits by a Kiwi artist in 2016 and proved Walker was worthy of the hype that’s seen her tipped as the next big name in Kiwi music.
“Gin Wigmore, Broods and Lorde may have already made a name for themselves overseas, but this rising star is well on her way to hitting the big time” – MTV Australia
“If you haven't heard of Theia, she's an up-and-coming Kiwi singer who, in a matter of weeks, has earned a huge following and comparisons to Lorde and Broods” – NZ Herald
‘Roam’ made its mark on the Spotify Global Viral Chart, the US Viral Chart, the Australian Viral Chart, the Malaysian Viral Chart and topped the NZ Viral Chart. It has now clocked more than 6.5 million plays on Spotify and continues to grow. ‘Roam’ also dominated the airwaves in New Zealand, reaching radio’s coveted ‘Top 5’ in the Airplay Charts and holding #1 spot as the most played Kiwi song for seven consecutive weeks.
In February, she released her second single, the epic ‘Champagne Supernova’, another soaring anthem. The beautifully shot video that accompanies ‘Champagne Supernova’ features choreography by the Artistic Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Francesco Ventriglia, and performances from dancers Veronika Maritati and Massimo Margaria.
Theia got her first taste of touring over summer 2016/17, opening for one of New Zealand’s most successful musical exports, Broods. She followed that in April 2017 with her first live performances in Australia, opening for The Kite String Tangle tour.
Theia, who is signed to Warner NZ and Warner Australia, is now preparing to release her debut self-titled EP and is giving fans a taste of the talent still to be revealed, with her new single ‘Treat You’. The upbeat, feel good tune shines a spotlight on the exuberance of youth and shows yet another side to the enigmatic singer who in just a matter of months has become one of the most talked about artists on the scene right now.
